My trip to First People Buffalo Jump in Ulm Montana.
It was a great hike to the top of the jump with beautiful scenic views for three hundred and sixty degrees. A nice easy to moderate three mile loop to the top of the jump and back down to the visitors center. You don't have to do the hike you can drive to the top of the jump as well, I did both. They told me at the visitors center the jump is one mile long and in places fifty feet high one of the biggest known jumps in the USA. The First People Buffalo Jump is one of many state parks in and around Great Falls. Something that might surprise you, entrance to all Montana's state parks is free to all Montana state residents. As I hiked the loop I got a quick look at a cotton tailed rabbit, about a half a dozen grouse of some type and a lot of the loudest grasshoppers I have ever heard. No photo opps here, they were just to fast for me. This curmudgeon is not only the Layz1 but also the slow1. I long ago lost that blazing speed I had in my youth. At the visitor center they told me that a prairie rattlesnake had been seen along the trail a number of times this summer. Something I was hopping to see and get a picture of but it was not to be on this day. In the pictures below you will see a rather large butte also refer to as a mesa, plateau or table. They all have a different definitions but unless you have some type of measuring device I don't know how a laymen like myself would tell them apart. So from this day forth I will refer to this type of formation as a butte. Got that! Beside I think the word butte is a perfect fit because they are so butte-tif-ful. {I love to mess with my spell check program} I hope you enjoy the pictures from the First People Buffalo Jump.
Now for my favorite part of the hike, the top of the jump, the piece de resistance--- pictures of the prairie dogs and the town they live in. You will find some of the pictures that I took with a telephoto lens a little blurry that is because not only am I the Layz1 and the Slow1 I'm also the shaky1. Next time I will remember to bring the trypod, I promise.
