Covered bridges in the Great North Woods of New Hampshire.

These pictures are of all the covered bridges in the Great North Woods that I know of. The key words here are "that I know of". I bet that there are more out there that I don't know of.

Bridge number one, the River Road bridge in Pittsburg is my favorite because it has many great memories for me. When I first started camping in Pitsburg some thirty plus years ago you had to cross this bridge to get to the Lake Francis state campground. Now you cross a small unimpressive wood bridge that you see right beside it. The old covered bridge is used just for snowmobiles and foot traffic. The trip into Lake Francis campground will never be the same for me. The most disturbing part about this is the town of Pittsburg or the state of New Hampshire hasn't seen fit to keep this bridge in better shape. All that money for advertising to bring the tourist to northern NH and we let the things they come to see rot away. Go figure! Maybe it just a few of us that think change is not always for the best. Now that I have my ranting out of the way it's on to bridge two.

Bridge two is the Happy Corners bridge in Pittsburg NH. This one is still in use today but it is hard to say for how long. It looks fair in the pictures but in reality it is in pretty poor shape.

Bridge number three is the Bacon Road bridge in Pittsburg NH, this one is not in use and has been closed since before my first trip up to Pittsburg. Nice small group of rapids looking north from this bridge. I read somewhere that a group of people from the area are trying to raise the funds to restore this bridge. Lets hear a big "way to go" for these people and hope that the state of NH helps them with money for this project.

Bridge number four I know nothing about. It appears to have been restored by someone but I don't know by who or why. It is located in Groveton NH and can be seen from route three. It sets in front of a restored train engine right beside one of the old paper mill in the center of town. I have never noticed a plaque or anything with information but that doesn't mean that there is not one there. I go by it all the time but have not stopped to check it out for many years. I like many others tend to take things that are right in my back yard for granted. My bad.

Bridge number five is still in use today and in seems to be in very good shape. It crosses the Connecticut River into Lunenburg VT from either Dalton or Lancaster NH. I am not really sure what town it is in NH just taking a guess. If you haven't noticed yet let me point out that I am not very observant sometimes.

Bridge number six is located in Columbia NH and is also still in use today. It crosses the Connecticut River into VT and looks to be kept in excellent shape. I am not sure what town in VT it goes into. For my last rant, let's go Pittsburg and New Hampshire take some of those tourist dollars and fix the covered bridges. Maybe there is some federal money out there to help fix them. Enjoy the pictures.
