Oh deer these pictures are pretty darn good if I must say so myself.

This spike horn came out of the woods near my garden where I was working and took me by surprise. I thought he would run as soon as I made a move to go to the house and get my camera but to my amazement he followed me almost to the door. He stopped at my crabapple tree for a quick snack and stayed there till I came out with the camera. From the way he kept coming toward me and looking at me I think that maybe he has been hand fed this winter by someone in the neighborhood. Fortunately we still have almost six months before hunting season so there is still time for him to develop a fear of us humans. I am no animal expert but I think that the deer are the smartest animal in the New Hampshire forest. They seem to know when it is safe to be around humans and when it is not. If you ever went hunting for one you know what I mean. So I think this guy will be alright, lets hope. The outlook for this baby moose is not as good. I took these photos of the baby moose while he was laying in the tall grass right beside route 3 in Colebrook and the mother was no where to be seen. Again I am no expert but I have never seen a mother moose stray far from it young. My guess is the mother was hit by a car or truck and in her panic ran out in the woods and died leaving the young thing waiting for her to come back. I don't believe it can survive on it's own without the mom to protect him. I think he will probably fall pray to a predator or starvation. But if that theory is not to your liking we can say that he was found and is being raised by a pack of coyotes and is learning how to howl as I write this. Feel better now? As a bonus I am throwing in a few pictures of the humming birds that visit my feeders. Enjoy!
